4 Considerations to Determine the Best Coating Solution

By Vince Todd, Sales Director

Choosing a coating solution that doesn’t perform well for a specific application can lead to costly mistakes. This is why it is important to understand how and in what type of conditions the end product will need to perform. To determine the right coating solution for a specific job, these are the four big factors that must be considered:

  1. Will the end product be for interior or exterior use?
  2. What environmental conditions will the end product be exposed to? Will high heat or conditions such as snow and ice or salty ocean air be present?
  3. How will the coating solution be applied? Will it be using existing equipment on a production line or on location using a specialized application method?
  4. Will the coating need to resist the growth of bacteria, mold, fungus and other microorganisms?

Let’s say you need to recoat the balcony handrails of a seaside condominium. Not only will the coating need to be suited for exterior use, but it will also need to be able to handle in a salty, corrosive environment. Since you are recoating handrails, the application will have to take place on location, so it will need to work with your own method of application, such as an electrostatic sprayer.

Once you’ve considered these factors, your coatings supplier will determine which type of coating meets the requirements, and whether your project calls for designing a custom coating or if there is a coating already formulated to fit your particular parameters. No matter who your coatings provider is, you should expect this sort of communication to find the best coating solution.

At Accessa, we work hands on to determine the right formula for the specific application. Once we’ve identified the correct coating solution, we conduct a trial to test if the coating works with the customer’s application system. If it’s appropriate, we then vigorously test the end product to ensure it performs in demanding conditions such as salty, ocean environments.

By identifying the end product’s performance requirements and sharing them with your coating supplier, you can find a coating solution to meet the challenges of any application.
